In the fifteenth century, however, hogwash referred to the slop or swill produced by a kitchen. The water used to boil the turnip, the carrot scrapings, the unusable bits of fat and gristle—all were thrown into a pail under the sink before being carried out and fed to the hogs. In the sixteenth century, hogwash encountered a competitor with the appearance of swill, a word deriving from the Old English swillan, meaning to wash out.
