General term that includes all pathologic processes that affect the periodontal tissues. They can be restricted to the soft tissues (gingivitis) or involve all the periodontal support tissues (periodontitis) and induce periodontal attachment loss.Disease involving the supporting structures of the teeth (as the gums and periodontal membranes).Characterized by inflammation and degeneration of any of the structures of the periodontium. The most common form is periodontitis.Inflammation of the gums.Disease of the tissues around a tooth, often leading to damage to the bony sockets of the teeth.Gum disease characterized by inflammation and infection of the gums, ligaments, bone, and other tissues that surround and support the teeth. Gingivitis and periodontitis are the two primary forms of periodontal disease, which is also called pyorrhea. Gingivitis results from the buildup of plaque and calculus on the teeth. This buildup can cause the gums to pull away from the teeth and lead to the formation of pockets called periodontal pockets, between the gums and the teeth. The accumulation of plaque and calculus on the teeth that causes periodontal disease is the result of poor oral hygiene in general and, specifically, inadequate or infrequent brushing and use of dental floss to clean the teeth.Disease of the structures supporting the teeth, i.e. the gums, periodontal membrane, and alveolar bone. The action of bacteria on food debris accumulated around the margins of the gums causes the formation of plaque, which eventually forms a hard deposit, tartar (or calculus). This accumulates in the gingival crevices (the spaces between the gums and the surface of the teeth), which become abnormally enlarged to form gingival pockets, This early stage of the disease, chronic gingivitis, is marked by chronic inflammation of the gums, which become swollen and bleed easily. Calculus accumulates in the gingival pockets, causing bleeding and ulceration. Untreated, the plaque spreads to the underlying periodontal membrane and alveolar bone, which are destroyed. In this stage, chronic periodontitis, the teeth become loosened and eventually fall out.A disease of the supporting structures of the teeth, the periodontium, including alveolar bone to which the teeth are anchored. The most common initial symptom is bleeding gums, but loosening of the teeth, receding gums, abscesses in pockets between the gums and the teeth, and necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis may be present as the disease process worsens. Proper dental hygiene, including proper brushing of the teeth, use of dental floss, gum massage, and periodic removal of plaque by a dentist or dental hygienist, will help to prevent periodontal disease.Periodontal disease refers to any condition affecting the periodontium, which encompasses the tissues supporting and surrounding the teeth. The prevalent form of periodontal disease is gingivitis, characterized by inflammation of the gums. Left untreated, gingivitis can progress to marginal periodontitis, frequently leading to the formation of a periodontal abscess.
</oembed>
