The threadlike female worm, some 12 mm long, is larger than the male; it emerges from the anus in the evening to deposit its eggs, and later dies. If the eggs are swallowed by man and reach the intestine they develop directly into adult worms. Pinworms cause entero-biasis, a disease common in children throughout the world.Any of numerous long, slender nematode worms, especially of the genus Enterobius. They parasitize humans.Enterobius vermicularis, a parasitic nematode belonging to the Oxyuridae family, is responsible for infesting the intestines and cecum. Commonly known as pinworm, this organism is prevalent in both temperate and tropical areas, with a particular incidence among school-age children.
