PPS occurs 20 to 30 years after the original disease and causes slow, progressive weakening of the muscles. Other symptoms include fatigue, decrease in muscle size, involuntary twitching of muscles, muscle and joint pain, respiratory and sleep problems, trouble swallowing, and cold intolerance. There is no cure for PPS.The development of motor and respiratory muscle weakness, limb muscle atrophy, fatigue, and diminished endurance occurring approx. 15-25 years after an initial bout of paralytic poliomyelitis. The syndrome results from progressive motor denervation.
