He was very skeptical of much of parapsychology methodology. In particular, he criticized Puthoff and Targ’s method of control of experiments in telepathic communication of local views of the Stanford area. By enabling “viewers” to eliminate possible “targets” one by one, they were increasing the probability of scoring a subsequent “hit.” Hyman took the position that before allowing the existence of any paranormal phenomena, any possible explanations by established normal means must be totally eliminated. Acting in that role, Hyman appears in much of the skeptical literature on paranormal phenomena.
