Screening is the cornerstone of preventive medicine and includes testing for problems such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and certain types of cancer. Doctors recommend periodic blood pressure measurements, cholesterol tests, dental checkups, eye examinations, and skin examinations. In addition, women are advised to have Papanicolaou smears, clinical breast examinations, and mammograms. Prostate and testicular examinations are recommended for men. Other screening tests a doctor may order include blood tests, bone density measurements, urinalysis, electrocardiograms, colonoscopy, and tests for sexually transmitted diseases.Evaluating patients for diseases such as cancer, heart disease, or substance abuse before they become clinically obvious. Screening can play an important part in the early diagnosis and management of selected illnesses and in some instances prolongs lives.Screening involves examining seemingly well individuals to identify diseases in their early stages, when treatment remains viable.
