A skin reaction that is caused by expo¬ sure to an allergy-causing substance. Skin allergy occurs in response to a substance that may cause no apparent rash or inflammation the first time a person is exposed to it. But, on subsequent occasions, after the skin has become allergic to the substance, further exposure produces an eruption.Skin irritation that occurs after exposure to an allergen, a substance that triggers an abnormal immune system response.There are primarily two kinds of allergic skin responses. The first is contact allergic dermatitis, where red, itchy spots emerge anywhere from a few hours to two days following skin exposure to an irritant. Common triggers for this are adhesive materials in bandages, nickel in jewelry, and cosmetic products. The second type is contact urticaria, which results in red, elevated patches appearing just minutes after the skin comes into contact with a potential allergen. This can be caused by specific chemicals, plants, or insect stings.Minimizing contact with the triggering substance is advisable if feasible. While the cause is often easily identifiable, there are instances where skin tests may be necessary to pinpoint the specific allergen.
</oembed>
