A form of croup that typically occurs in the middle of the night. The characteristic barky cough is present, but there are no other signs of viral illness. The child is perfectly fine the next morning, only to have a repeat of symptoms the next 2 or 3 nights. Hospitalization is rarely required. An allergic etiology is suspected. Antihistamines are sometimes helpful.
