Making the lower part of the body insensitive to pain by injecting medications into the spinal column to block the nerves that lead to and from the legs, groin, buttocks, and lower region of the abdomen. Spinal anesthesia is also called a saddle block. Spinal anesthesia is used for repairing fractures in the legs and feet, hernia repair, removal of the appendix or uterus, surgery on blood vessels in the legs and lower part of the abdomen, lower back surgery, childbirth, and operations on the male and female urinary and reproductive systems. It produces excellent pain control without affecting the respiratory system.Suppression of sensation in p)art of the body by the injection of a local anesthetic into the space surrounding the spinal cord. Then are two types used for surgery: subarachnoid and epidural. In the latter the anesthetic is injected into the outer lining of the cord. The injection site for subarachnoid spinal anesthetics is in the lumbar region of the vertebral column, the needle being inserted between the vertebrae (anywhere between the second and fifth). For epidural anesthetics, the sacral region may also be used. The extent of the area anesthetized depends upon the amount and strength of local anesthetic injected. Spinal anesthesia is useful in patients whose condition make; them unsuitable for a general anesthetic perhaps because of chest infection; for certain obstetric procedures; or in circumstances where a skilled anesthetist is not readily available to administer a genera anesthetic. The technique is commonly used in Scandinavia and the US.Anesthesia resulting from disease or injury to conduction pathways of the spinal cord.The injection of anesthetic solutions into the spinal canal to numb the entire region below the point of injection.
</oembed>
