Spinal stenosis is caused by arthritis in the joints of the spine, which enlarges the joints and narrows the spinal canal. This narrowing can compress and pinch the nerves that travel through the lower spine into the legs. Symptoms include aching in the lower back arid sometimes a sharp pain that extends into both buttocks, the thighs, and, at times, the calves and feet. Rest usually relieves the discomfort.A variant of sciatica resulting from the constriction of the spinal canal within the lumbar vertebrae. This constriction exerts pressure on the roots of the sciatic nerve.
