A common name for multiple personality disorder, an emotional condition in which a person feels two or more distinct identities that surface regularly, control the individual's action, and know little about the other identities. The identities are in conflict with one another. Split or multiple personality is known medically as dissociative identity disorder. It is one of the dissociative disorders, a group of related mental illnesses in which an individual becomes detached from fundamental aspects of waking consciousness, such as personal identity, memory, or awareness of self and body. Dissociative disorders are thought to originate in overwhelming traumatic experiences, such as wartime combat, physical or sexual assault, or severe accidents. When unable to integrate the trauma into his or her normal consciousness, the individual detaches from the disturbing experience as a way of coping with it.The term is often used to refer to multiple personality disorder but is mistakenly used to describe schizophrenia as well.
</oembed>
