Granulocyte colony stimulating factor, erythropoietin, and other growth factors are administered to stimulate proliferation of the stem cells after reinfusion. Until adequate numbers of cells repopulate the patient’s marrow and bloodstream, the patient is at high risk for infection and bleeding.
