The adult worm lives in the small intestine of humans, who acquire it by eating insufficiently cooked pork. Adult worms may take up residence in the intestine, depriving the host of food. Larval forms of T. solium may encyst in the brain, resulting in seizures. In some underdeveloped nations the onset of seizures in adulthood is presumed to be the result of neurocysticercosis until proved otherwise. The infection is treated with niclosamide or praziquantel.
