An archaic term for ointment or salve. Herbal unguents may be made with 8 parts heated lanolin, beeswax and olive oil, Vaseline, lard or other fatty medium, into which is mixed 2 parts finely powdered herbs. Another old method is to boil herbs in water until a strong extract is formed, strain it, then add it to warm (not hot) olive oil. Bring it to a boil, and simmer until the water has completely evaporated, leaving only the oil. Now add enough beeswax and rosin to solidify the ointment, stirring continuously.A smooth oily medicinal substance which can be spread on the skin to soothe irritations.
</oembed>
