Addison disease is usually the result of an autoimmune disorder. Less frequently, Addison disease can be caused by tuberculosis, fungal infections, the spread of cancer cells to the adrenal glands, amyloidosis, surgical removal of the adrenal glands, and failure of the pituitary gland to produce enough ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone). Symptoms tend to begin gradually and include chronic fatigue, muscle weakness, loss of appetite, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, low blood pressure, a low blood sugar level, and hyperpigmentation. Untreated, this illness can lead to shock and death.A rare illness marked by gradual and progressive failure of the adrenal glands and insufficient production of steroid hormones. Patients with Addison\u2019s disease make inadequate amounts of both glucocorticoids (e.g. cortisol) and mineralocorticoids. (e.g. aldosterone). Cortisol is important to glucose metabolism, affects protein, carbohydrate and fat metabolism, and helps to maintain blood pressure and cardiovascular function. Hypovolemia and hypotension may result from aldosterone deficiency.A medical condition resulting from the deterioration of the cortex in the adrenal glands situated above the kidneys. Symptoms include skin discoloration, fatigue, muscle weakness, bodily wasting, reduced appetite, and hypotension. The condition could arise from various factors such as tuberculosis affecting the adrenal gland, syphilis, amyloid disease, internal bleeding in the gland, tissue death, or cancerous tumors. In numerous instances, the underlying reason for the cortical wasting remains unidentified."}
