Manic episodes are characterized by elevated mood, grandiosity, pressured speech, racing thoughts, distractibility, decreased need for sleep, increased goal- directed behavior, and extreme involvement in pleasurable (but reckless) activities. Depressive episodes are often characterized by diminished interest, sadness, disturbed sleep and appetite, feelings of guilt and hopelessness, and problems with concentration and performance. During periods of depression, suicidal thoughts are common. In fact, among adolescents diagnosed with BAD, around 20% make serious suicide attempts; males are more likely to complete these (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2000)."}
