Bruno envisaged a universe of infinite space and innumerable inhabited worlds, overseen not by a single god but by the \u201cGod in things,\u201d with a \u201cprofound magic\u201d or psychic life of nature as the principle of movement. Although \u201cagainst\u201d mathematics, Bruno defended Copernican theory against popular sentiment on animistic and magical grounds. Describing Copernicus as \u201conly a mathematician\u201d who had little understanding of his own scientific discoveries, Bruno saw Copernican heliocentricity as confirmation of a return to an \u201cEgyptian\u201d philosophy of universal animation."}
