The causes of periostitis include infection, injury to the area, or an abnormal growth in the tissue. It is diagnosed by X rays and bone scanning. Symptoms include bone pain, localized tenderness and warmth, and swelling of the soft tissue. Periostitis is generally treated by medication to relieve the pain and inflammation. When necessary, medication is prescribed to fight any associated infection.Inflammation of the membrane surrounding a bone. Acute periostitis results from direct injury to the bone and is associated with a hematoma, which may later become infected. The uncomplicated condition subsides quickly with rest and anti-inflammatory analgesics. Chronic periostitis sometimes follows but is more often due to an inflammatory disease, such as tuberculosis or syphilis, or to a chronic ulcer overlying the bone involved. Chronic periostitis causes thickening of the underlying bone, which is evident on X-ray.Periostitis means inflammation on the surface of a bone, affecting the periosteum.Inflammation of the periosteum, the membrane covering a bone. Findings include pain over the affected part, especially under pressure; fever; sweats; leukocytosis; skin inflammation, and rigidity of overlying muscles. Infectious diseases, especially syphilis, and trauma cause this condition.Periostitis, which is inflammation of the connective tissue encompassing bones, typically arises from a direct impact on the bone. Symptoms encompass pain, tenderness, and swelling at the impacted site."}
