When pyruvate is produced from glucose during glycolysis, for further metabolism via Krebs cycle, it must first be converted to acetyl CoA. The pyruvate dehydrogenase complex requires many enzymes and cofactors to accomplish this reaction. Cofactors involved include coenzyme A, which includes pantothenic acid as part of its structure, NAD+(coenzyme form of niacin), FAD (coenzyme form of riboflavin), and TDP (coenzyme form of thiamin), as well as magnesium and lipoic acid. During the series of reactions, carbon dioxide is eliminated and NADH + H+ is produced, which can be used for ATP synthesis through the electron transport system."}
