Ron Hubbard (1911-86), founder of the church of Scientology. In the 1940s Hubbard developed an alternative form of psychotherapy, which he termed dianetics. According to Huboard, dianetics proposed to solve the problems of the individuals true self, or Thetan (analogous to the soul in Greek philosophy) attempting to operate in the human body. Problems emerged with the aberrant activity of the mind. Hubbard proposed a method of counseling called auditing to counter the negative activity of the mind. Once such problems were largely erased, when the individual had reached the state of \u201cclear,\u201d the Thetan could then begin to operate as a free being.As dianetics spread in the early 1950s, Hubbard was also expanding his speculation concerning the operation of the post-clear\u201d individual. Some material came from the observation of auditing sessions and other from his broad reading and thinking. His speculations moved into the metaphysical realm and he began to view the Thetan as an eternal being that repeatedly sought embodiment in the physical. He also saw that among the abilities of the Thetan was its conscious exteriorization from the body. His speculations culminated in teachings on God and the Thetans ultimate relationship with the divine."}
