Surfer's nodules are caused by the repeated or constant friction and pressure of the hard, rough surfboard on these areas. Surfers who may spend many hours in a kneeling position on their surfboards tend to develop these characteristic nodules, which are also called surfer's knobs, surfer's lumps, and surfer's knots. The nodules appear as firm, fluid-filled cysts or as hematomas. They improve when the surfer stops kneeling for long periods. In some cases, the nodules may need to be treated by a physician. Surgical removal is sometimes necessary.Nodular swelling and possible bone changes of the area of the lower leg and foot exposed to pressure and trauma while on a surfboard.
