Pediatric spinal cord injuries involve severe damage to the spinal cord in children from birth to 15 years. The injury can result in a loss of both mobility and feeling. It is estimated that there are approximately 8,000 to 10,000 new cases of spinal cord injuries each year. These injuries tend to be less common in the pediatric population, with approximately 1-10% of the new cases involving this group (National Spinal Cord Injury Association [NSCIA], 2000). Males are four times more likely to suffer a spinal cord injury than are females. The most common cause of a spinal cord injury is a motor vehicle accident. Acts of violence are the second leading cause, followed by falls, sports-related injuries, and other injuries (NSCIA, 2000; Spinal Cord Injury Information Network, 2000).<\/p>\n
