A system of therapy, usually offered by psychiatric hospitals or psychiatric units of general hospitals, in which the patient spends most of the day in structured activities (such as psychotherapy) or medical treatment but returns home in the evening. Day treatment is intended as a transition service between inpatient and outpatient care. Day-treatment care has increased by nearly tenfold in the US since the 1960s, most of the growth of facilities occurring in urban areas where travel distance between home and treatment center is relatively short.<\/p>\n
