A measure of the national economy which takes into account such factors as depletion of natural resources, the costs of crime, the household and volunteer economy, defensive expenditures (other than against crime), the distribution of income, and the loss of leisure. The GPI is a start toward an economic indicator to replace the gross domestic product (GDP), which is based entirely on money and industrial and service production data and thus does not allow for other factors which bear on the satisfaction of people with the condition of the nation. It is suggested by its authors that such an indicator would be a better guide to public policy than the GDP. The GPI is the product of Redefining Progress, a nonprofit public-policy organization in San Francisco.<\/p>\n
