An agreement between an infertile couple and a woman who agrees to bear the couple’s baby and give it to them at birth. Surrogate mothers are sought by some women who are unable to become pregnant because they have had hysterectomies or repeated miscarriages or because their reproductive systems are otherwise unable to produce a pregnancy. The infertile woman’s egg can be fertilized by her partner’s sperm in a laboratory and surgically implanted into the surrogate mother, who then carries it to term. In other cases, the surrogate mother’s egg can be fertilized by the man’s sperm, using artificial insemination. Homosexual couples who want to have children also use surrogate motherhood. Surrogate mothers usually are paid for their services and all their expenses. This approach is very controversial ethically and is illegal in some states.<\/p>\n
