The disorder may be the result of compartment syndrome (build-up of pressure in the muscles), tendinitis, muscle or bone inflammation, or damage to the muscle. It usually disappears within a few weeks, responding to rest and physiotherapy. In some cases, however, it becomes chronic and so severe that it occurs even at rest.
