Endospores have survival value since the spore can remain for long periods of time in a nongrowing state and then, under appropriate conditions, can be induced to germinate and regenerate the original cell. Endospore formation may be viewed as being akin to hibernation, that is, a kind of “bacterial hibernation.”<\/p>\n
