From elementary school, children move either into middle school or directly into high school. While kindergarten is largely preparatory, in the first grade children begin to learn the three R\u2019s\u2014reading, \u2019riting, and \u2019rithmetic and are gradually introduced to material in science, geography, and history, simplified at first, but increasingly sophisticated as the grades progress. The U.S. Department of Education has also recommended that children have some exposure to foreign languages, computers, music, and art in elementary school.<\/p>\n
