Surgical removal of part of the colon. A hemicolectomy is usually performed to remove colon tissue damaged by a blockage or to treat colon cancer, colitis, or diverticular disease. In hemicolectomy, the diseased segments of the colon are removed and the remaining healthy parts are joined together.<\/p>\n

Surgical removal of about half the colon (large intestine), usually the right section (right hemicolectomy) with subsequent joining of the ileum to the transverse colon. This is performed for disease of the terminal part of the ileum (such as Crohn’s disease) or of the cecum or ascending colon (such as cancer or Crohn’s disease).<\/p>\n
