Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is a disease of the bile ducts and liver. Primarily effecting women this condition may lie dormant for years and never cause a problem. However, once triggered, PBC acts as an autoimmune disorder in which the body attacks its own cells as if they were foreign. Specifically, the body attacks the cells that line the bile ducts. This causes damage to the ducts, allowing bile acids to corrode the liver. The condition of having this corrosion of the liver is called cirrhosis.<\/p>\n
A rare, progressive form of cirrhosis usually occurring in middle-aged women, marked by jaundice, pruritus, fatigue, and autoimmune destruction of the small bile ducts.<\/p>\n
