Xanthine

A nitrogenous extractive contained in muscles tissue, liver, spleen, pancreas, and other organs and in the urine, formed during the metabolism of nucleoproteins. It is acted upon by certain enzymes to form uric acid and is excreted in the urine.

An intermediate product in the breakdown of nucleic acids to uric acid, found in blood, body tissue and urine.

A derivative of xanthine, e.g. caffeine or theophylline.

Nitrogenous extract formed during the metabolism of nucleoproteins. Three methylated xanthines include caffeine, theophylline, and theobromine.

Ability to decompose the amino acid xanthine is a characteristic of some Nocardia species. Four per cent xanthine in nutrient agar is cultivated for up to 1 month, dissolution of the crystals around colonies being indicative of decomposition.

Byproduct of the metabolism of nucleoproteins, found in muscles, liver, and spleen.

A nitrogenous breakdown product of the purines adenosine and guanine. Xanthine is an intermediate product of the breakdown of nucleic acids to uric acid.

A nitrogenous compound present in muscle tissue, liver, spleen, pancreas, and other organs, and in the urine. It is formed during the degradation of adenosine monophosphate to uric acid.

A yellow nitrogen-containing compound located in body tissues and fluids.
