Young-helmholtz theory

A theory of color vision that assumes three types of cones, usually assumed to be maximally responsive to red, green, and blue.


The theory that color vision depends on three different sets of retinal fibers responsible for perception of red, green, and violet. The loss of red, green, or violet as color perceptive elements in the retina causes an inability to perceive a primary color or any color of which it forms a part.


A theory that seeks to elucidate the process of color vision in the human eye suggests that three distinct sets of retinal fibers are responsible for perceiving the colors red, green, and violet.
