Zileuton

An antiasthma drug. Zileuton (Zyflo) is a type of antiasthma drug called a leukotriene inhibitor, used by people with mild to moderate asthma to decrease symptoms and the number of acute asthma attacks. Zileuton cannot relieve an asthma attack that has already started. It works by inhibiting leukotrienes, substances in the body that are associated with the inflammation and tightening of airway muscles in the lung that are characteristic of asthma.

A medication designed to disrupt the biosynthetic pathway responsible for the production of leukotrienes is utilized to aid in the prevention of asthma attacks. By interfering with this pathway, the medication helps reduce the synthesis of leukotrienes, which are inflammatory molecules involved in the constriction of airways and the initiation of asthma symptoms. The use of this medication aims to minimize the frequency and severity of asthma attacks, providing relief to individuals with asthma and promoting improved respiratory function. It is important to follow healthcare professionals’ guidance and adhere to the prescribed treatment plan to effectively manage asthma symptoms.
