Making your own supplements and vitamins is easier than ever nowadays. It might sound complicated, but once you’ve learned the basics it’s actually quite easy. You could start your own business selling your home-made supplements, or make your own for a much more affordable alternative to store-bought brands. To get started with making your own supplements, you will need a capsule machine, an empty capsule made from K-caps, vegetarian or gelatin, and herbs or supplements that you want to use.
Making capsule supplements is the best option as some herbs can be bitter, so placing them inside a capsule can ensure that you’re able to enjoy the full benefits of taking the herb in raw form without getting a nasty aftertaste in your mouth. If you’re considering the idea of making your own health supplements, here’s what you need to know.
Getting the Right Ingredients
Before you start, do some research on the supplements that are going to benefit your health, wellness and fitness goals the most. For example, if you’re looking to improve your digestion, then turmeric supplements are an ideal choice, while elderberry supplements are high in antioxidants and can help to protect against stress-related cell damage. The ingredients that you use will depend on why you want to take the supplements, and there are thousands of options available.
What You’ll Need
- Capsule filling machine: Depending on your preference – and your budget – you can get manual machines, semi-automated, or machines offering complete automation.
- Filling powders or herbs of your choice
- Small and medium bowls
- Empty capsules: Be sure to check the size specification for your capsule machine. You can find capsules made of gelatin, or vegetarian-friendly ones.
Setting Up Your Capsule Filling Machine
Don’t panic if your capsule filling machine looks a little technical at first – once you’ve got the hang of it, it’ll be easy to use. Start off by assembling the capsule using the manufacturer’s instructions. It’s a good idea to place a paper towel underneath to catch any powder that spills over.
Separate all the empty capsules and place the caps and bases in the capsule filler’s holes. You may find colored capsules useful to help you see if you have missed any holes. Then, check if any capsules are sticking up above the surface by running your finger over them – the bases should all fit completely into the holes.
Filling Your Capsules
Now the fun begins! Start by mixing all your powders or herbs together and sift all the ingredients so that you have a uniform mixture. Even if you’re not using a mix of ingredients, sifting is still a good idea to make sure that you have gotten rid of any lumps in the powder. Depending on the ingredients you’re using, you may need to blend and sift them several times to ensure that the mixture is even.
Once done, it’s time to pour your ingredients into the capsules. Then, using the spreading tool that should come included with your capsule filling machine, make sure that the powder is distributed evenly and has filled all the capsules. Remove any excess powder and use the tamping tool to compact the ingredients. Add, spread and tamp more powder as needed, until all capsules are completely filled.
Finally, take the base block off the stand and place the cover block over it. The capsule caps and bases should be facing one another. Then press the cover block carefully so that the top and bottom parts of the capsules fit together. All the capsules should now be closed and in the cover block.
Making your own capsule supplements is easy, fun, and cheaper than buying from the store!
