During times of competition, athletes often experience the need to eat out while traveling. In many cases, such as in college and high school athletics, food choices can be limited by finances, time-constraints, and the coach’s personal preferences. In other cases, the athlete has a wide array of choices from which to select his or her meals while on the road. An athlete must not only be concerned with satisfying his or her hunger, but also nutritional status, in order to ensure optimal sports performance. Eating on the road can create problems for the athlete, such as temptations for foods that do not contribute to optimal performance and a tendency to overeat. It is possible to eat on the road and choose high-performance foods; how¬ ever, it takes planning and practice.
