An antiangina drug. Nitroglycerin (Deponit, Nitro-Dur, Nitrolingual, Nitrostat, Minitran, and others) is used to treat the symptoms of angina (chest pain). Nitroglycerin is used in four ways. It relieves the pain of angina when it is taken at the beginning of an attack; prevents pain when taken before an attack is expected; reduces the number of episodes when taken on a regular basis; and treats congestive heart failure.

Any nitrate of glycerol, but specifically the trinitrate. The trinitrate is a heavy, oily, colorless liquid obtained by treating glycerol with nitric and sulfuric acids, well known as the explosive constituent of dynamite. In medicine it is used as an arterial and venous dilator, especially to treat angina pectoris, congestive heart failure, and acute pulmonary edema.
