A written order by a physician, dentist, or other authorized individual for a medication (either a prescription drug or a nonprescription drug;) to be given to a specific inpatient. A similar order written for a prescription drug for an outpatient or outside the hospital is a ”drug prescription.” For a nonprescription drug (an over-the-counter drug), no similar paperwork is required outside the hospital.
