End stage

End stage refers to the most progressed phase of a disease, where the affected organ or system loses its ability to perform its normal functions. Under such circumstances, the inflicted damage on the body is irreversible; hence, the treatment focuses on enhancing the patient’s condition as much as possible and alleviating symptoms (refer to palliative care). In some instances, a machine might be employed to assume the organ’s function. For instance, in the case of end-stage kidney failure, a dialysis machine may be used to filter the blood. The term “end stage” is applicable to various conditions, including cancer, severe kidney failure, and chronic lung diseases.
