Exostosis is the most frequently observed type of benign bone tumor. It is characterized by the protrusion of bone tissue. This condition predominantly develops at one end of the femur, or the thigh bone, or the tibia, commonly known as the shin bone. The cause of this condition might be genetic predispositions or extended pressure exerted on a specific bone.
In the majority of instances, exostosis doesn’t manifest any noticeable symptoms. It is frequently discovered only after an injury, when it presents as a firm swelling. In rare cases, the tumor might apply pressure on a nerve, leading to pain or weakness in the impacted region.
The diagnosis of exostosis can be substantiated through X-ray imaging. If the tumor is causing discomfort or if it affects the appearance, it might be removed surgically.
