Malplacement of an organ or an object; for example, an ectopic pregnancy, which occurs outside of the uterus—or an event such as a heartbeat.

Occurring in an abnormal place or out of sequence. In an ectopic pregnancy, the pregnancy develops outside the uterus. The most common site is within a fallopian tube. Symptoms include lower abdominal and back pain, nausea, vaginal bleeding, and breast tenderness. Rupture can lead to internal bleeding and shock. The usual treatment is surgical laparotomy or laparoscopy.

Ectopic means out of the usual place. For example, the congenital displacement of the heart outside the thoracic cavity is said to be ectopic. An ‘ectopic gestation’ means a pregnancy outside of the womb.

In an abnormal position. Opposite of entopic.

The term used to describe a body structure that appears in an abnormal location or position, or a body function that occurs at an unusual time.
