A medical movement that thrived from 1 850 to 1 940 in the United States. The doctors who trained at Eclectic medical schools relied heavily on American medicinal plants in their practice. They were responsible for introducing popular herbs used today such as Echinacea and Black Cohosh.
The name commonly applied to the American School Physicians, a distinct group of physicians who trained in their own schools, were licensed as M.D.s, and specialized in low-tech, nonhospital rural health care-the country doc with a black bag. Besides standard medical procedures, they used a more wholistic approach to disease. They lost the licensing wars and are no more.
