Thoracentesis

Surgical puncture of the chest wall to remove fluid from either of the pleural cavities.


Removal of fluid from the thoracic cavity, usually due to cancer or pneumonia.


Removal of fluid from inside the chest wall with a syringe and needle, for diagnosis or treatment purposes.


A procedure in which fluid is removed from the space around the lungs; also known as a pleural tap. Thoracentesis is performed to relieve the symptoms associated with fluid accumulation and to analyze the fluid for diagnostic purposes. In the procedure, which is performed under local anesthesia, the doctor uses a fine needle to draw out the fluid.


Inserting a needle through the chest wall and into the pleural space, usually to remove fluid for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes.


Thoracentesis is a medical procedure involving the extraction of fluid from the pleural cavity using a needle inserted between the ribs. This fluid may be collected either for diagnostic testing purposes or to alleviate the accumulation within the cavity.


Using a hollow needle to tap the chest and withdraw fluid.
