Macroglossia is defined as enlargement of the tongue. Diagnosing macroglossia is a judgment call on the part of the examiner. Unlike the case in numerous assessments of body proportions (height, weight, head circumference, distance between the pupils of the eye, etc.), there are no charts or graphs to assist physicians in determining when the tongue is large. However, certain clinical clues may be present. The tongue may protrude from the mouth or cause symptoms of upper airway obstruction (noisy breathing, snoring, or cessation of breathing). Feeding difficulties may also be present.
Congenital disorder characterized by an abnormally large tongue, seen in Down’s syndrome and certain other disorders.
Macroglossia refers to the unusual enlargement of the tongue. It’s associated with conditions like Down’s syndrome, hypothyroidism (a condition where the thyroid gland is underactive), and acromegaly (a hormonal disorder leading to the enlargement of various body parts). Some tongue tumors, like haemangiomas or lymphangiomas, can also cause it.
