Encounter group

A group of people that is organized for the purpose of learning about self and others. The usual focus of group discussion is on the concerns of the group participants.


A form of treatment of psychological disorders, where people meet and talk about their problems in a group.


A form of group psychotherapy. The emphasis is on encouraging close relationships between group members and on the expression of feelings. To this end, physical contact and confrontations between group members are arranged by the group leader. The stress of the experience can be damaging to maladjusted people.
