A division of dentistry focused on preventing and addressing malocclusion (an irregular alignment of upper and lower teeth). Typically, these procedures are carried out during the developmental stage of teeth when they are more pliable, although they can also provide advantages during adulthood.

An orthodontist might begin by creating replicas of the teeth and capturing X-ray images of the head and jaws. In some cases, specific teeth, usually premolars, could be removed to create space for the remaining teeth. Subsequently, improperly positioned teeth are gradually shifted using mild pressure applied through orthodontic devices.
