Morphine sulfate

Crystallized from opium.


A narcotic painkiller. Morphine sulfate is used to relieve severe pain. Morphine is often used to relieve the pain of cancer and the pain associated with surgery. Morphine is the drug of choice to relieve pain of myocardial infarction (heart attack). Morphine is thought to work in the central nervous system to alter the person’s perception of pain.


An opiate commonly used in oral or injectable form to control severe acute or chronic pain. Its side effects may include sedation, respiratory depression, constipation, itching, hallucinations, tolerance, and dependence.
