Myristicin

A compound found in nutmeg thought to be responsible for its hallucinogenic effect following ingestion of large amounts of nutmeg.

A methylenedioxyphenyl substance. It is found in nutmeg and mace, and in lesser quantities in black pepper, parsley, celery, dill, and carrots. Nutmeg produces effects similar to alcoholic intoxication. Reportedly, these spices have been frequently used as narcotics by prison inmates. Around 5-15 g of nutmeg powder can produce euphoria, hallucinations, and narcosis. The side effects, however, are very unpleasant and severe: headache, nausea, abdominal pain, delirium, hypotension, depression, acidosis, stupor, shock and, in large doses, liver damage and death.
