Founded in 1952 as a consolidation of the National League of Nursing Education, the National Organization for Public Health Nursing, the Association of Collegiate Schools of Nursing, the Joint Committee on Practical Nurses and Auxiliary Workers in Nursing Services, the Joint Committee on Careers in Nursing, the National Committee for the Improvement of Nursing Sendees, and the National Nursing Accrediting Service purpose is “that the nursing needs of the people may be met.”
The national organization concerned with all of nursing. It is a membership organization of individuals and of agencies, and includes nurses, related professionals, and consumers. It is the official accrediting agency for schools of nursing (professional and vocational). Continuing education programs are conducted nationally on a variety of nursing and nursing education topics. Consultation on programs and management is available to educational institutions and providers. (The American Nurses’ Association (ANA), although also national, is primarily an association of constituent state associations of individual nurses, and is concerned with their welfare and professional performance.)
An organization originally formed by the merging of three other nursing organizations. The principal concern of the League is improvement of nursing education and service.
