Neurilemma

Nerve sheath.

Thin tissue sheath enclosing certain nerve fibers.

The outer sheath, formed of Schwann cells, which covers the myelin sheath around a nerve fibre.

Thin membranous sheath enclosing a nerve fiber; also called neurolemma.

The sheath of the axon of a nerve fiber. The neurilemma of a medullated fiber contains myelin laid down by Schwann cells.

In the peripheral nervous system, the cytoplasm and nuclei of Schwann cells wrapped around the myelin sheath or the unmyelinated processes of nerve fibers. This contributes to regeneration of damaged nerve fibers by producing growth factors and serving as a tunnel or guide for regrowth.

The fragile covering that surrounds a nerve fiber.
