Manometry

The measurement of pressures within organs of the body which contain gases or liquids, e.g. the oesophagus or parts of the brain.

A technique for measuring changes in the pressure of gases or liquids as a result of biological or chemical actions. For example, in esophageal manometry, a tube is passed through the mouth or nose down into the stomach. To evaluate swallowing difficulties, pressure measurements are taken at intervals along the tube as a person s wallows.

The measurement of the pressures exerted by muscles in the gastrointestinal tract, e.g., in the anus, rectum, or esophagus.

The assessment of pressure, whether it’s in the form of a liquid or gas, is conducted using a device known as a manometer. This technique, referred to as manometry, is employed to gauge blood pressure using an instrument called a sphygmomanometer.
